🧼 Leather Care Guide

Caring for your leather isn’t just about appearances — it’s about longevity.
With the right care, leather goods can last a lifetime and even improve with age.

Why Leather Care Matters

No matter how much you've spent on your leather item, regular care is essential. Proper conditioning and protection from dust, dirt, rain, snow, sun, and general wear will:

  • Extend the life of your leather

  • Maintain its original look and feel

  • Reduce the need for frequent replacements

With just a small amount of effort, leather can become virtually indestructible and age beautifully.

General Leather Care Tips

  • Avoid letting leather get soiled, soaked, or dried out.

  • Store properly to prevent cracking and discoloration.

  • Clean and condition regularly to maintain softness and appearance.

  • Keep leather away from direct heat, humidity, and harsh chemicals.

  • If it’s not safe for your skin, it’s not safe for your leather.

🛠️ The Four Stages of Leather Care

1. Cleaning

Use a cleaner that preserves leather’s natural oils. Avoid products like saddle soap that strip moisture.
Tips:

  • Always test on an inconspicuous area first

  • Avoid greasy residue — it attracts bacteria and damages stitching

  • Use a soft cloth or specialized brushes for stitched areas

  • Try a nubuck cloth for delicate or premium leather

2. Conditioning

Conditioners restore moisture and prevent leather from drying and cracking. Use sparingly, typically every 3–6 months.
Look for:

  • Natural oils or waxes

  • Products without petroleum or mineral oils

  • Lightweight formulas that won’t clog pores

3. Polishing

Polish adds shine and enhances the look, especially for special occasions.
Caution:

  • Avoid polishes with heavy dyes or waxes that transfer or seal pores

  • Test for color transfer and buildup

  • Always buff gently for a natural finish

4. Protection

A moisture barrier protects from water damage, stains, and stiffness.
Keep in mind:

  • Protection products may make cleaning/conditioning more difficult

  • Apply sparingly and allow to fully dry before use

  • Waterproofing once a year is usually enough unless used heavily outdoors

📝 Quick Leather Care Routine

Weekly:

  • Wipe with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust and debris

Every 3–6 Months:

  • Apply a leather conditioner to restore suppleness

Annually:

  • Waterproof your leather goods if needed based on climate or lifestyle

Bonus Tip:
Store leather shoes with cedar shoe trees to absorb moisture and maintain shape.

⚠️ Important Reminders

  • Always follow the instructions on leather care products

  • Don’t use generic sprays or cleaners not meant for leather

  • Work in a well-ventilated area to avoid irritation from strong product scents
